A new satellite forensics lab will be located at Offutt Air Force Base.

Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson announced that the Air Force will establish a new satellite forensics lab at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, Nebraska. Nelson said that Air Force Chief of Staff General Norton Schwartz called to inform him that the Air Force had completed its approval process and will establish a Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command lab within the Martin Building at Offutt.

The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command’s main mission is to locate, recover, and identify missing armed services personnel from past military conflicts. Because JPAC’s headquarters is located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, there has long been a need to bring JPAC services closer to American families with unaccounted-for military service family members. Omaha was selected in-part because of the city’s central mainland location, the high quality of research at both Creighton and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and extant facilities and resources at Offutt Air Force Base.
