NU Regents OK Employee Benefits To Partners

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents has approved a plan to extend employee benefits to domestic partners.

The board voted 5-3 on Friday to approve extending coverage to a same-sex or opposite-sex adult who shares an employee's household and with whom the employee is financially interdependent.

Extending benefits will bring NU in line with the other 11 universities in the Big Ten Conference, as well as a majority of its peers.

The regents requested a legal opinion in light of the state's ban on same-sex marriage. An Omaha law firm says it could withstand legal opposition since it doesn't refer to civil unions, domestic partnership or other same-sex relationships or confer any of the traditional rights of marriage upon participants.
