While Swimming Goes On, Keeping An Eye On Wildfires

Swimming officials are keeping watch over wildfires back home as they keep the swim trials running smoothly in Omaha.

It's quite a contrast. USA Swimming officials are living in two worlds as the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials continue in Omaha.

Executive director Chuck Weilgus says it's tough, but his staff is focusing on running the Olympic preliminary while keeping a wary eye on the raging wildfires in Colorado Springs, where USA Swimming's headquarters is located.

"We've got nine staff members who have been evacuated from their homes," Weilgus says. "We have one staff member who has lost everything. We're doing what we can to help them."

Weilgus says they've told staff in Omaha that if they feel the need to go home, arrangements will be made to get them there. Meanwhile, there's swim trials to run.

"It's trite, but the show must go on. And it will be a great success. We owe that to our athletes and the coaches and the fans."
