The feds have sent in 300 to 400 extra firefighters to combat flareups.

Ainsworth fire chief Brad Fiala says 300 to 400 fire personnel are doing their best to knock down fires that are flaring to the north out of the Niobrara River valley. The fire-fighting effort got a boost from the federal government, with extra manpower to fight the blazes.

An overnight aerial survey using infrared technology provided officials with an updated estimate of 50,000 acres burned, compared with previous estimates approaching 100,000 acres.
