Medical center officials will make reductions in staff by the end of the year.
Nebraska Medical Center spokesman Paul Baltes tells 1110 KFAB the majority of positions targeted for elimination are currently vacant and will not be filled. The number of staff whose jobs will be eliminated is expected to be 38.
A small number of staff members will see hours reduced. The announcement was made to staff this morning. Those impacted by this decision will be notified over the next week to 10 days and efforts will be made to align them with openings within the system and among partner organizations.
Baltes says this is the first time in 10 years The Nebraska Medical Center has had to layoff employees. Medical center leaders say it was a very difficult decision but a necessary one.
Baltes says the action reflects the hospital’s commitment to reduce overall costs in order to address challenges locally and nationally as healthcare reform becomes reality.
