The Iowa National Guard says its last Vietnam veteran has left its ranks.

Col. Ronald Albrecht retired Sunday at a ceremony at Camp Dodge in Johnston.

The 58-year-old had served a total of 36 years for the nation's military.

Albrecht enlisted in the U.S. Navy soon after graduating from Waverly-Shell Rock High School in 1971. While in the Navy he was deployed for a year supporting the U.S. mission in what was South Vietnam.

He left the service in 1978, went to college and eventually became a teacher.

Albrecht joined the Iowa Army National Guard in 1983 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1984.

He'll continue working for the National Guard as a civilian contractor with Northrop Grumman.
