The state treasurer is encouraging parents and grandparents to open a 529 college savings plan.
State Treasurer Don Stenberg is pitching a gift idea for Nebraskans this holiday season: a state-sponsored college savings plan.
Stenberg is encouraging parents and grandparents to open a 529 college savings plan through the Nebraska Educational Savings Plan Trust. He says more than 53,000 Nebraska families are saving within the plans, as are 190,000 families nationwide.
The trust offers four college savings plans. Investments are approved by the Nebraska Investment Council.
Stenberg says the college savings program has recently added a conservative, low-cost investment option that is not subject to shifts in the stock market. He says that program is best for families with children who are near college age.
