Blizzard leaves thousands of OPPD customers in the dark
Schools, services and businesses in much of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa have closed in the wake of the season's first major snow storm.
Nearly all schools and child care services were closed Thursday in Omaha. OPPD officials say crews are doing their best to restore power to customers. Spokesperson Paula Lukowski says because of the stong winds, blowing snow and difficult travel conditions, it could be several days before power is fully restored.
She says extra crews and damage assessment crews are being called in. As of 11:00 38,500 customers were without power.
The National Weather Service says winds were expected to die down later Thursday. But the snow cover means freezing temperatures will stick around until next week.
