The men were killed in a two vehicle crash on the Highway 275 overpass near West Maple last Friday

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the identity of four men killed near Waterloo. Chief Deputy Marty Bilek says Manuel Leon Lopez, Pedro Soc Ortiz, Gabriel Ralias Juarez and Mario Alvarez Simaj lived in Fremont, but worked at a packing plant in South Omaha.

He says they came to the United States from Guatemala to find work in a effort to provide for their families back home.

All four were working in the United States under assumed names, which are different that the ones listed above.  Bilek says the Sheriff’s Office is attempting to make official notification to the Guatemalan Consulate in the US.

Bilek says icy conditions caused the car the men were riding in to cross the center line and collide with a pick up truck.  They all died at the scene.
