The City of Omaha will lease 40 Chevy Caprice cars each year through 2015
The new Chevy Caprice cars were unveiled today at the Omaha Police/Fire Training facility. City officials say 40 cars were purchased at the end of 2012 and 40 more will be phased in each year through 2015
Marc McCoy is the City's Equipment Services Manager and says the cars are faster than the Crown Victoria's, which were used for years and are no longer made by Ford. McCoy says they also have more safety features, including additional lighting and traction and stability control.
Those features will allow the officer to maintain control when a cruiser goes into a skid. McCoy says the cars will be used on the front lines for two years and then put into reserve for two additional years. He says the average for the Crown Victoria was about 60-thousand miles a year.
