The officer who was present is on administrative leave as the "in custody" death is investigated
Omaha Police say an officer was in the area of 30th and Martin Avenue around 1:30 Friday morning when he heard several gunshots.
While checking the area, Officer James Shade says the officer found a man walking in the street near 33rd and Ernst. The officer asked the man to stop several times, but he did not respond to the officer’s directions.
The officer asked for back up to respond and again directed the man to stop. Shade says the man then pulled a handgun and shot himself one time. The officer did not fire his weapon.
Rescue personnel rushed 31 year old Robert Willis to the hospital where he died. Per Nebraska State Statute, the Omaha Police Department is investigating this incident as an in-custody death.
The officer is on paid administrative leave pending a police department investigation.
