Officials have begun installing solar-powered parking meters in downtown Omaha that accept credit cards.

The 1,300 parking meters will be installed between Tuesday and March 1. Meter rates also will increase by 50 cents beginning March 11, the first increase in nearly 20 years.

The city's parking fund will cover the cost of the meters from Duncan Solutions, which is $650,000 with management and training. They are expected to last about a decade.

The new meters also will accept debit and pre-paid parking cards, dollar coins, dimes and quarters. It's unclear what will happen to the old meters.
