Scammers pretending to be from OPPD's billing department have been calling customers.
Spokesperson Jodi Baker tells 1110 KFAB some callers tell the customers their bills are overdue and immediate payment is needed. Other callers say they need immediate credit card payments for installation of new equipment such as meters.
The callers demand credit card numbers or other financial information that is later used for fraudulent purchases.
Baker says about a dozen business and residential customers have been contacted so far. She says the calls are bogus and reminds customers that OPPD never calls customers about a billing problem.
The district says people with questions should call 402-536-4131 or 877-536-4131 outside of Omaha.
