Traffic deaths so far this year are up 56% when compared to the past four years at this point.
Through February 24th, there have been 39 traffic deaths on Nebraska roads. And all but eight happened in rural areas.
"On some rural highways, the speeds are higher," says Fred Zwonechek, Highway Safety administrator for Nebraska, "and you're also a long distance from emergency medical services."
