The Chairman of the Douglas County Democrats says Chris Jerram "displayed an attitude" not shared by Democrats of the county
On St. Patrick's Day the Democratic City Councilman was photographed holding a t-shirt that depicted Republican Mayoral Candidate Jean Stothert as a stripper. The t-shirt included the words "Jean, quit stripping our tax dollars."
Jerram has since apologized and says he did not make the shirt, did not wear the shirt and does not agree in any way with its content. In addition to apologizing to Stothert, Jerram said "I’d also like to apologize to the women of our community and others for this. It was over the top and was offensive. I was wrong. I am sorry. I accept responsibility and will learn from this mistake."
Douglas County Democratic Party Chairman Kris Pierce issued this statement Monday afternoon. “We do not and will not condone or excuse actions such as those conducted by Mr. Jerram on Sunday”, Pierce says. “The t-shirt that Mr. Jerram was displaying demeans all women no matter what political persuasion they may be.”
Pierce says they do not doubt that Jerram’s apology is sincere, but they are encouraging him to immediately make concerted efforts to heal the wounds that his actions have caused to all the members of the community.
"We hope that this lapse of judgment displayed by Mr. Jerram does not reflect poorly on the other great candidates and public servants who also affiliate themselves with the Democratic Party."
