Today's scheduled commencement ceremony at Memorial Stadium has been canceled because of inclement weather.
University of Nebraska-Lincoln officials made the decision early Saturday morning after monitoring weather conditions and forecasts.
"Every reasonable attempt was made to hold commencement ceremonies. Our first concern is for the safety, comfort and convenience of our graduates and guests," Chancellor Harvey Perlman said.
Saturday's ceremony, originally scheduled for 9:30 a.m., was to be the first commencement in the university's history to be held at Memorial Stadium.
With the Bob Devaney Sports Center being converted into a volleyball-specific venue and the Pinnacle Bank Arena not yet completed, the stadium was selected to host more than 1,700 graduates and thousands of guests.
UNL's backup plan now goes into effect. Graduates and family members may come to the Hawks Championship Center to be awarded their diploma this morning. This will allow for each student to be professionally photographed and for family members to see their graduate receive the diploma and take photos.
Diploma tables will be set up on the Hawks Center indoor field, with college banners to indicate where students will find their dean and be awarded their diploma. Parking will be available immediately west of the Hawks Center, in the stadium garage or at the Champions Club.
