Three corrections officers at the Nebraska State Penitentiary were assaulted by an inmate Tuesday at 2:15 p.m. The staff were responding to a medical emergency after an inmate appeared to be agitated and there was blood in the cell.
When the staff opened the door the inmate struck one staff in the head and struck the other staff in the head and shoved his head into the wall. A third staff was also hit in the head. Physical force was used to subdue the inmate.
All three staff was taken to a hospital. One suffered a possible concussion, one a sprain and the third had no injuries that required treatment.
The Nebraska Department of Corrections will investigate the incident and information will be turned over to the county attorney for their review. A misconduct report will be issued and a disciplinary hearing will be held to determine sanctions against the inmate involved in this incident.
