Man Rescued From Missouri River

As a steady rain fell Monday morning, Omaha Fire and Rescue crews pulled a man out of the Missouri River near the I-480 bridge.

Acting Battalion Chief Chris Langlois says the man, who is in his 30s, went to the hospital in critical condition with possible life threatening injuries. .

Langlois says someone in one of the riverfront condos called just before 9 a.m. to report a man in the water possibly clinging to a log just north of the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge.

Omaha and Council Bluffs rescue teams both launched their boats and Eppley Airfield had their boat on standby.

A few minutes into the search, an Omaha Police officer spotted the man in the water.  Rescue crews were able to quickly pull the man out and take him to this hospital.

It's unknown right now how the man got into the water or how long he was in the river.  Langlois said that without the full cooperation from Council Bluffs, Omaha and Eppley, rescues like this don't happen.

"The current moves fairly quickly so when we get a report of someone at one place in the river they could be down the river within minutes," he said. "So without these boats, without our boat in cooperation with Council Bluffs and Eppley Fire that's vital for us to get out into the river to get someone out of the water if we need to."
