Unmanned Minivan Rolls Into Police Cruiser

A Council Bluffs Police cruiser sustained damage after a suspect vehicle rolled into it Wednesday morning.

Council Bluffs Police say around 3:00 an officer was patrolling the area of 35th and Avenue G when he recognized a silver 2001 Chrysler minivan that had been stolen on January 15th. The van got on to westbound I-480 and the officer kept the van in sight as he passed the information along to Nebraska law enforcement.

As the van headed towards Omaha it stalled just before the Nebraska/Iowa state line. The officer pulled up behind the stalled van and put his emergency lights on. The driver, 51 year old Brian Hanson, bailed out of the vehicle and started running in the eastbound lanes of I-480.

The officer gave chase and was able to catch Hanson, but during the pursuit the minivan rolled backwards into the parked police cruiser. The cruiser sustained minor damage.

Hanson was arrested and booked on charges of Second Degree Theft, Eluding, Interference with Official Acts, Fugitive from Justice (Felony Warrant).
