City Councilmen Propose Plastic Bag Fee

You could have to pay a small fee if you want to walk out of the grocery store with plastic bags. Two Omaha city councilmen are considering an initiative that would require grocery stores to charge for the bags.

Council member Pete Festersen says the bag initiative would be implemented to discourage the use of plastic bags in favor of reusable bags. The proposal would require stores to collect five to ten cents for each plastic bag used to bag groceries. Festersen along with Council President Ben Gray are looking in to how they could implement the initiative in Omaha.

Festersen told 6 News he’s tired of the bags littering parks, streams, trees vacant lots and landfills.
