City Crews Remove Swastika From Memorial Park

As Omaha Police continue their search for whoever burned a Nazi symbol  into the grass at Memorial Park, city crews are busy covering up the act of vandalism.

Parks Director Brook Bench says someone used a chemical on Saturday to turn a nearly 20 x 20 patch of the green grass into a brown swastika at the park, which memorializes U.S. military members who died in World War II.

"We covered it with a tarp and then we had crews go out yesterday (Sunday) morning and they tilled up the whole area so that there is no sign of it," Bench says.  "We'll be adding new top soil and seed to finish it off.

Police say other Nazi symbols, including hate-filled books and flyers, have shown up elsewhere in Omaha in recent weeks.  Visitors to the park over the weekend placed flowers and small American flags at the spot in the lawn.
