Iowa Holds 20th Annual Sales Tax Holiday

Cash registers will be ringing in Iowa on Friday and Saturday. This weekend is the 20th annual Sales Tax Holiday in the Hawkeye State and shoppers will be able to save big money on back-to-school clothing and shoes.

Shoppers won't have to pay state sales taxes on many items, but John Fuller with the Department of Revenue says there are restrictions on what items are tax-free. "If you buy an article of clothing or a pair of shoes that cost less than $100, that's tax free during those two days."

Fuller says there is often confusion about what is tax free.  "A work uniform would be considered clothing, but shoulder pads for your son's football team, would not be considered clothing."

Other items include: clothes, shoes, socks, underwear, baby clothes, diapers and swimwear. Not included is sports equipment, backpacks, notebooks, pencils or similar back-to-school items. The tax holiday ends at midnight Saturday.
