Short On Cash? - Check For Unclaimed Property

This is a list you will want your name to be on during the holiday season.  Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg says you can give yourself a Christmas present by checking their unclaimed propery division.

Stenberg says, "We are holding about $170 million for 350,000 owners.  Just this calendar year we returned about $13 million to more than 15,000 Nebraskans.  In my eight years as treasurer we've returned more than $96 million to over 126,000 Nebraskans.  I'm often asked how people not know they have that money.  The answer is I don't know but it does happen a lot and we are happy to return the money to the rightful owners."

Stenberg says the funds could come from forgotten bank accounts, un-cashed paychecks, rent and utility deposits to a family trust or insurance benefits from deceased relatives or loved ones.

Residents are encouraged to go to treasurer.nebraska.gov and check the unclaimed property list.  If the amount is under $500, you can fill out a claim form online.  If the amount is over $500, you will have to fill out some paperwork to show proof of ownership.
