Inmate Uses Homemade Weapon To Seriously Injure A Staff At LCC

LINCOLN, Nebraska - A staff member at the Lincoln Correctional Center was assaulted by an inmate Thursday evening and was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

The assault happened around 6:30 p.m. when the inmate was being escorted from his cell so that an inspection could be made of a maintenance issue inside. The inmate was in restraints but was able to use a homemade weapon made from a toothbrush to basically stab the staff member's hand. That caused two puncture wounds.

Additional team members deployed chemicals (oleoresin capsicum) in order to help gain control of the inmate.

The case has been turned over to the county attorney and they will determine if the inmate will be prosecuted. The Department of Corrections disciplinary process will be used that includes sanctions, including the loss of good time, applied according to the rules and regulations.
