Two Inmate Deaths Reported In Omaha

OMAHA and LINCOLN, Nebraska - Investigations are underway after two inmates died while in custody.

Douglas County Department of Corrections Director Mike Myers says, "Philip Teplitsky was transported to Nebraska Medicine at 2:45 p.m. on February 3, 2020 for a medical condition that became life-threatening. He passed away on February 4, 2020 at 11:05 a.m. while hospitalized. Mr. Teplitsky was being held at the Douglas County Department of Corrections for a Sex Offender Registry Violation. The Douglas County Department of Corrections extends our condolences to Philip's family and loved ones. There will be no further comment at this time pending the resolution of a grand jury investigation as required by state law."

37 year old Teplitsky entered Douglas County Corrections on January 6, 2020.

The Nebraska Department of Corrections reports an inmate at the Community Corrections Center - Omaha was taken to a hospital after being found unresponsive in his cell around 4:20 this morning. The cause of 21 year old Carmichael Elya's death is not known.

Elya began his sentence on March 6, 2017 and was serving six to ten years for first degree sexual assault out of Sarpy County.

A grand jury will conduct an investigation into his death.
