Ice jams are to blame for flooding over the weekend in Dodge County. Authorities say nearly 30 cabins were flooded and two people were rescued when the ice jams forced the Platte River to rise out of its banks Saturday evening.
Dodge County officials announced Sunday that the floodwaters had receded. The American Red Cross opened an evacuation center in Fremont on Saturday, but had closed it down by Sunday afternoon.
While the water has receded the sheriff doesn’t know when the ice jam will break up completely. Steve Hespen says Sunday's warm weather will speed up the process.
Hespen isn’t expecting it to get worse at this time but he’s still encouraging residents to have important documents and overnight bags ready in case the unexpected happens.
He tells 6 News the flooding they saw over the weekend it’s not all that odd for the time of year.
"We have low land flooding in this area with the events that happened last year people are a little bit more on edge with the water coming up which is understandable especially with all the devastation we had last year."
