Man shot while standing outside grocery store

An Omaha man was shot while standing outside of a grocery store Thursday night.

Omaha Police say officers were called to the J-N-J Grocery Store near 42nd and Bedford for a ShotSpotter activation just after 9:30. Police say once on the scene, officers found evidence of a shooting, but couldn't locate a victim. OPD says just before 10:00, officers were called to CHI Creighton Hospital for a walk-in shooting victim.

Police say the victim, 37 year old Dion Hayes, told officers that he was standing by the front door of J-N-J Grocery when he heard gunfire and realized he had been shot. Hayes told officers he then called a friend, who picked up him and gave him a ride to the hospital.

Hayes injuries are non-life threatening and the shooting remains under investigation.
