An Omaha City Council Proposal Would Quantify Mask Need

Instead of repeatedly revisiting the mask ordinance every few weeks, Omaha City Councilman Ben Gray says the council should just let the data do the talking.

“I think council members are getting tired of meeting every two weeks to redo this thing," Gray told 6 News.

He proposes Omaha’s mask ordinance should stay in place until positivity rates and case numbers reach a certain level.

“Once we’ve reached this threshold, then we can talk about removing the mandate,” Gray said.

Under the proposal, based on data from health experts, the seven day rolling average would need to equal 10 or fewer cases per 100- thousand people.

The positivity rate would need to be at or below five percent.

City Council members will discuss extending the ordinance and the Gray proposal Tuesday afternoon at the regular weekly meeting.

They could vote on November 10th.
