Douglas County Department of Corrections announce inmate's death

A woman jailed at the Douglas County Department of Corrections has died.

On Friday, DCDC Director Mike Myers released a statement regarding the death of 36 year old Trista Schaefer.

"At approximately 1:32 p.m. on Oct. 28, 2020, Ms. Trista Schaefer, an incarcerated individual, required emergency medical care. Life saving care was immediately initiated by Douglas County Department of Corrections staff and was continued by Omaha Fire Department personnel. Ms. Schaefer was subsequently transported to Nebraska Medicine where emergency medical care continued. Unfortunately, Ms. Schaefer did not survive. We'd like to express our sincere condolences to Trista's loved ones."

The Douglas County Department of Corrections says they will have no further comment on Schaefer's death, pending a grand jury investigation, which is required by state law when an inmate dies in custody.

DCDC say Schaefer was jailed on Thursday, October 22nd for a probation custodial sanction and was subsequently charged with Theft by Deception and Identity Theft.
