(Bellevue, NE) -- Nebraska appears to have lost out to Alabama in its bid to become the new U.S. Space Command headquarters.
On Wednesday, the Secretary of the Air Force announced that Redstone Arsenal had been named as the preferred location of USSPACECOM. Designating Bellevue, Nebraska, and five other considered sites, as “reasonable alternative locations.”
Wednesday's announcement is not deterring Nebraska leaders from pushing forward with their bid to make Offutt Air Force Base the new headquarters. In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts said the state will continue to lobby for the headquarters to be established at Bellevue's Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue. “Even with today’s announcement, Nebraska will continue to make the case to the incoming administration for bringing USSPACECOM to the Heartland in the coming days and weeks. When you look at the data and our competitive advantages, Nebraska remains the best place in the nation to locate this mission.”
Nebraska had offered to put up $107 million in public and private money to help offset the roughly $1 billion it would cost to build the headquarters in Bellevue.
