Douglas County Health Department Gives Update on COVID Vaccine Progress

The Douglas County Health Department (DCHD) will have administered more than 6,000 doses of COVID-19 this week.

During the past week, DCHD has worked with community partners to complete Phase 1-A vaccinations with a special effort to reach Tier 4 and 5 of that group. During the coming week, we will start community clinics to protect the county’s population of individuals 80 years of age and older.

Nearly 5,000 of our neighbors in that group made their appointments for the vaccine on Friday when the vaccine appointment site opened. In the opening weeks of the vaccine rollout, much of the work on healthcare workers was done by the healthcare systems, while pharmacies served many long-term care facilities.

As of this morning, according to the DCHD dashboard, 47,792 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been given in the county, with 10,909 of those being the second doses and completing the series.

As more vaccine comes into the community, the rate of vaccinations will increase. On Saturday, January 30, the Douglas County Health Department (DCHD) reported 151 new cases of COVID-19 that were received over the past day ending at midnight.

The total number of cases in the county since the start of the pandemic in March is 60,867. The Health Department received three more death certificates related to the pandemic during the past day. One man in his 50s and a man and a woman over 80 years of age have passed.

That puts the number of deaths in the county connected to the pandemic at 597. DCHD reports that 47,503 Douglas County residents have recovered from the disease.

According to the most recent local hospital report received this morning, medical and surgical beds were at 77% occupancy with 354 beds available and adult ICU beds are occupied at a 70% rate with 100 beds available. There were 204 individuals hospitalized who have been diagnosed with COVID-19, with 78 of them receiving adult ICU level care.

There are also 15 more persons of interest (generally waiting for test results). Twenty-four individuals who were confirmed or suspected of having COVID-19 were on ventilators.
