Bond set for former Papio-La Vista South coach accused of sexual assault

(Sarpy County, NE) -- Bond is set for a former metro teacher accused of sexual assault.

On Thursday, bond was set at $10,000 for 29 year old Stephen Gentry, a former teacher and coach at Papillion-La Vista South High School. Along with the bond, a Sarpy County Judge ordered that Gentry must not have contact with any minors who are not part of his household. The school district says after three years at the school, Gentry resigned in February citing "personal reasons" for his departure.

According to an arrest warrant issued by the Sarpy County Court on Wednesday, he faces a charge of third-degree sexual abuse by a school employee relating to a report made on January 19th. Parents of the student in question reportedly brought their concerns about an inappropriate relationship between Gentry and their child up to the school district. This case is the first time the new Nebraska statute on inappropriate relationships between school employees and students has been applied. The new law makes it a crime to engage in sexual contact with a student regardless of their age.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. April 13th. If found guilty, Gentry faces up to two years in jail.
