2021 starts the year with most rain on record for Omaha

(Omaha, NE) -- The start of 2021 is going down as the most rain the Omaha area has ever seen to start a year.

Just under a half an inch of rain fell at Omaha's Eppley Airfield on Monday, which brought the city's moisture totals up to 6.19 inches so far this year. That mark that makes for the rainiest start for a year, January 1st through March 22nd, on record.

The rain is a welcome relief after the area saw an incredibly dry year in 2020. By March 22nd of last year, Eppley Airfield had a year-to-date rainfall total of 3.11″. Throughout the entire year, Omaha recorded just 17.65″ of precipitation, making 2020 the 3rd driest year on record.

The dry ground and very low river levels, as a result of last year’s drought, have kept most flooding at bay in the area so far this year. helped us out there.

Between Tuesday and Wednesday an additional 0.5″ to 1.5″ of rain is possible before the current storm system moves out of the region.
