(Omaha, NE) -- Major traffic flow changes are coming to Interstate 80 near 84th Street.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation says construction on I-80 bridges at 84th Street, Big Papio Creek and Little Papio Creek will require a full closure of westbound lanes on I-80 near the 84th Street interchange for repair work.

NDOT says, weather permitting, beginning July 6th all traffic from 78th Street to 87th Street will shift to eastbound lanes. They say there will be three lanes provided in each direction for head-to-head traffic. Interstate ramps near 84th and 72nd Street will also be temporarily closed through August.

Affected ramps include the 84th Street westbound on-loop, as well as the 72nd westbound on-ramp. The 84th Street eastbound on-ramp and on-loop will also close and remain closed through fall 2021. The 84th Street westbound off-ramp will remain open throughout construction.

Then in August, the NDOT says westbound traffic will shift back to westbound lanes. Three lanes of eastbound traffic will be maintained on the outside lanes to accommodate bridge repairs to the inside lanes of the eastbound I-80 bridge over 84th Street and the Big Papio Creek. In September, three lanes of eastbound traffic will be maintained on the inside lanes to accommodate bridge repairs to the outside lanes of the eastbound I-80 bridge over 84th Street and the Big Papio Creek.

Construction for the I-80 bridges at 84th Street, Big Papio Creek and Little Papio Creek Project includes bridge repairs, replacement of guardrails and overhead dynamic message signs, and permanent pavement markings.

NDOT says that drivers should consider alternate routes via I-680 and/or city streets during the construction period, which area is expected to be completed by early December.

More information about construction phases for this project and other NDOT construction efforts can be found here.
