Early Saturday Thunderstorm Winds Bring Down Trees, Knock Out Power

Severe thunderstorms packing high winds swept through the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metro area early Saturday morning causing a large amount of tree damage and power outages.

Numerous law enforcement and fire department reports of trees and branches down along with power lines;

Thousands of customers in the Omaha Public Power District are without power.

The same situation is reported in Council Bluffs by Mid American Energy.

A cold front came through the hot and humid air of Eastern Nebraska and Southwest Iowa setting off the large line of storms that blew through large parts of the area late Friday into Saturday.

At one point, civil defense sirens were sounded in the Omaha Metro because of the concern over the straight line winds.
