Man crashes into fence, tries to break into home before being shot

(Omaha, NE) -- An Omaha man is behind bars after police say he drunkenly crashed his car into a fence and tried to break into a home.

The Omaha Police Department says just before 1:30 Sunday morning, officers were called to the area of 110th and Shirley for an accident. Police say shortly after the initial call, dispatch then advised that a shooting had occurred at the location.

During an investigation, officers determined that 36 year old Benjamin Novak crashed into multiple mailboxes and then crashed through the fence into the backyard of a home on Shirley Street. Investigators say Novak then got out of the vehicle and attempted to break into the home before a resident shot a gun, hitting Novak.

Novak was taken to CUMC-Bergan Mercy Hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening injury, then booked into Douglas County Corrections. He's facing charges of attempted burglary, criminal mischief, driving under the influence - 4th offense, reckless driving, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, colliding with a fixed object and failure to maintain lane.
