One person unaccounted for, animals killed in fire at farm near Elk City

(Elk City, NE) -- One person is unaccounted for and animals are killed in a fire at a farm near Elk City, Nebraska.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office tells WOWT 6 News that the fire west of 225th Street and Dutch Hall Road, broke out around 6:00 Thursday morning. The fire appears to have broken out at a horse stable on the property north of Elkhorn. First-responders confirmed that some animals at the farm have died, but the Nebraska Humane Society at this time is unable to report how many or what kinds of animals died. NHS did say that all of the horses that got loose after escaping the stable have been rounded up. Nebraska Equine was also on the scene offering triage to injured animals.

6 News reports that their crew saw first-responders from Kennard, Yutan, Valley, Fremont, Bennington, and Ralston at the scene. No other details have been released about who the unaccounted person is or how the fire started. The state fire marshall is leading the fire investigation.
