1.7 million hens euthanized in northeast Nebraska due to avian flu

(Dixon County, NE) -- The bird flu forces over a million hens to be euthanized in northeast Nebraska.

On Wednesday, State and federal agriculture authorities announced that Nebraska’s sixth case of highly pathogenic avian influenza was found on a hen farm in Dixon County. The Nebraska and U.S. Departments of Agriculture say the case was found among a flock of 1.7 million egg-laying hens, which are now being euthanized. It’s the largest flock in Nebraska to be impacted by the bird flu.

About 2.7 million birds have been euthanized in total in Nebraska due to the avian influenza. Cases have also been reported in Butler, Merrick, Holt, and Scotts Bluff counties. Millions of birds have also been killed in Iowa in recent months because of bird flu cases found there.

Per USDA policy, NDA is also establishing a 6.2-mile control zone around the Dixon County hen farm. State ag leaders encourage anyone who sees signs of bird flu to call them at 402-471-2351; or contact the USDA at 866-536-7593.
