Bellevue woman found dead in her home following fire

(Bellevue, NE) -- A Bellevue woman is found dead in her home following a fire.

The Bellevue Police Department says just after 10:00 Thursday morning, the Bellevue Police and Fire Departments were called to a house on the near 28th and Chandler for a person found down in their home, along with the odor of smoke inside. Once on the scene, officers located a deceased female inside the home. Police say parts of the inside of the home showed signs of a recent fire, including the confirmed odor of smoke.

BPD says investigators learned that a neighbor had used a key to enter the home and check on the victim, 73 year old Kathleen Janus, after she was unable to reach Janus by telephone or through knocking on the door. The neighbor found the victim and then called 911. One of Janus' dogs was found deceased inside the home, while another was saved. The Nebraska Humane Society responded to assist with both animals.

Police say while the investigation is still on-going, there were no obvious signs of violence present.
